A Visitor's Guide to the Presidio of San Francisco, published in December 2009.
News from the Presidio:
Exciting news coming out of the Presidio this month. A Franciscan manzanita bush (Arctostaphylus franciscana), a species previously thought to be extinct, has been found in the Presidio. Biologist Daniel Gluesenkamp found the plant in an area that had recently been cleared of trees. The exact location is not being revealed, in order to protect the plant. It is a ground cover variety of manzanita, one of 106 different types of manzanita.
The plant is reported to be about eight inches tall with creamy white flowers, and spreads 20 feet across the ground and down a bluff.
The Crissy Field Center is moving into its new temporary location near East Beach, where it will remain for three to five years, during the Doyle Drive reconstruction project. The Crissy Field Center, which conducts environmental classes and workshops for inner city schoolchildren, will host an open house for the public on February 6, 2010.

A Visitor's Guide to Mount Tamalpais, published in August 2009.
News from Mount Tamalpais:
Mount Tamalpais State Park has managed to stay open this year, in spite of ongoing threats from Governor Schwarzenegger to shut it down, along with most other state parks. The compromise reached earlier this year that will keep the parks open means a considerable cut in funding, resulting in cutbacks in service and increases in fees throughout the state park system. Parking fees at Pantoll and the top of Mount Tamalpais have been raised from $6.00 to $8.00, and some restrooms in the park will be closed on weekdays.
The California State Parks Foundation is sponsoring the California State Parks and Wildlife Conservation Trust Fund Act of 2010, a ballot initiative for the November 2010 ballot that will fund the state parks through an $18 annual increase in the vehicle license fee. Sign the petition to help keep our state parks funded.
