COLD sunrise in the Marin Headlands this morning. The ground was covered in frost and snow could be seen on Mount Diablo and some of the distant peaks in the East Bay. Mount Diablo State Park is open, but the road to the top of the 3,849 foot mountain has been closed for the past two days, due to 18 inches of snow on the peak. Snow fell in inland parts of the East Bay, at elevations as low as 250 feet above sea level. With warmer temperatures forcast for this afternoon, the Mount Diablo summit road may open later today. Call 925-837-2525 for the current road closure information.

Today marks the publication of A Visitor's Guide to the Presidio of San Francisco, the latest guidebook from Way Out There Press. Take advantage of the Holiday Coupon Code above and get $2.00 of the regular price of $7.50 for this guidebook. This travel guidebook to the Presidio is in PDF format, 75 pages.
The Presidio was a U.S. Army base up until 1994, when it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is one of the newest and most innovative additions to the National Park System, which documentary filmmaker Ken Burns has called "America's Best Idea." The Presidio was founded as a Spanish military base in 1776, and was taken over by Mexico in 1822, shortly after that country won its independence from Spain. At the onset of the Mexican-American War, control of the Presidio was passed to the United States, when John C. Frémont and his troops sailed from Sausalito to spike the cannons of the fortress guarding the Golden Gate.
Today the Presidio is in the process of being transformed into a national park. New trails have been built, and more are on the way. Scenic overlooks are being developed. The hundreds of historic and architecturally significant buildings are being renovated and leased out to non-profit groups, as well as private businesses and individuals. The Presidio has the unique and challenging requirement of becoming the only financially self-sustaining national park in the country by 2013.
So much is happening, so fast, that a conventional print travel guidebook would be completely out of date before the ink was dry. This makes a PDF E-Book the ideal format for this type of guidebook. It can be updated on a regular basis, and people who buy the PDF can stay up to date by subscribing to the free quarterly newsletter, or by reading this News Blog.
$1 from every sale goes to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, an organization dedicated to funding, protecting, and enhancing the national parks that make up the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns got it right when he referred to the national parks as "America's Best Idea."
This guidebook is the third in a series, joining A Visitor's Guide to Angel Island and A Visitor's Guide to Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods. $1 from every sale of these guidebooks goes to the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, or the California State Parks Foundation.
